How to Change Colors While Crocheting in a Round

Changing colors in crochet can give such a pretty look to projects. But sometimes it can be downright confusing! So I thought I would share with you my favorite (and super easy) technique to use when changing colors while crocheting in a round.

In this photo tutorial, I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Cotton in Pink and Stonewash. A 4.5 mm (7) crochet hook is perfect for giving it this tight gauge (I just love these Clover hooks). Now let’s get started!

Step 1: Using pink yarn, make a magic circle/ring. Chain 3 and then work 10 double crochets into that ring. Pull circle tight.

Step 2: Using hook, pull loop that is on hook out, so that it is nice and big.

Step 3: Remove hook from loop and insert hook into the top of the chain 3 from the beginning of the round.

Step 4: Grab large loop and slip it onto hook. Tighten loop around hook.

Step 5: Grab Stonewash yarn and wrap around hook.

Step 6: Pull Stonewash yarn through both the pink loop and stitch on hook. *Make sure that the pink loop stays behind the stitch and doesn’t pull through with the stonewash yarn.* Work a chain with the Stonewash yarn to secure it onto the stitch.

Step 7: Continue by working 2 single crochets in each stitch around. Repeat Steps 2 through 6 with pink yarn at the end of the round.

And there you have it! Isn’t that easy? And it works so quickly and beautifully.

Next week, I will have a pattern up on the blog where you can use this simple technique to make an adorable gift for a special toddler in your life. Until then, Happy Crocheting!!
