Last month, I designed a fun crochet baby pullover for the Fall into Autumn Blog Hop. Toddler Jack-o-Lantern Hat
Materials:
1 skein WeCrochet Swish DK in Allspice
Small amount of WeCrochet Swish DK in Forest Heather
Small amount of medium weight black yarn for face
4mm (G) crochet hook
Small amount of poly-fil for stem
Yarn needle for sewing in ends & stem onto hat
Gauge:
18dc x 12 rows = 4” square
Toddler ages 2-4 size only!
Stitches:
Magic circle
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
dcfp – double crochet in front post
dcbp – double crochet in back post
st(s) – stitch(s)
sl st – slip stitch
f/o – finish off
Pattern Notes:
- Neither chain 1 nor chain 2 will count as a stitch.
- The bottom of the hat will be textured using the front and back post double crochet stitches. See diagrams in pattern.
- Yarn is easily swapped out for this pattern. Just make sure you have the proper gauge, or the hat may not fit.
- Use the following guide for how the number of stitches is communicated:
- The number before the stitch is the amount of times worked in one stitch
- The number after the stitch is the number of stitches you are to work that specific stitch into.
- When stitches are surrounded by asterisks (*), you are to repeat what is between the asterisks the amount of times stated.
- Number in parentheses is the number of stitches in each round.
- Eg. “*2dc, dc 3* around, sl st in first st in round to join, ch 2. (55)” means “*work two double crochet stitches in the first stitch, double crochet in next 3 stitches* continue working pattern between the asterisks (*) around, slip stitch into the first double crochet in the round to join circle, chain two. (there are 55 stitches in this round)”

Hat (Allspice yarn):
Round 1: Work 11 dc into magic circle, pull tight, sl st to join, ch 2. (11)
Round 2: 2dc in each st around, sl st in first st in round to join, ch 2. (22)
Round 3: *2dc, dc* around, sl st in first st in round to join, ch 2. (33)
Round 4: *2dc, dc 2* around, sl st in first st in round to join, ch 2. (44)
Round 5: *2dc, dc 3* around, sl st in first st in round to join, ch 2. (55)
Round 6: *2dc, dc 4* around, sl st in first st in round to join, ch 2. (66)
Round 7: *2dc, dc 5* around, sl st in first st in round to join, ch 2. (77)
Rounds 8-18: dc in each st around, sl st in first st in round to join, ch 2. (77)
Round 19: *dcfp, dcbp* around, sl st in first st in round to join. (77)
F/O and sew in ends.

Both stitches are completed as double crochets after yarn has been pulled around post.
Stem (Forest Heather yarn)(worked in continuous rounds):
Round 1: Work 6 sc in magic circle, pull tight. DO NOT JOIN.
Round 2: *2sc, sc* 3 times (9)
Rounds 3-6: sc in each st around (9)
Round 7: *2sc, sc* 4 times, 2sc in last st (13)
Round 8: *2sc, sc 2* 4 times, 2sc, sc (17)
Round 9: *2sc, hdc, dc, hdc* 4 times, 2sc, hdc, dc, sl st in 1st st of round to join.
F/O and sew on top of hat, stuffing lightly with poly-fil while you sew.
Eyes & Nose (black yarn) (make 3- 2 for eyes, 1 for nose):
Ch 2,
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, turn. (1)
Row 2: 3sc, ch 1, turn. (3)
Row 3: sc across, ch 1, turn. (3)
Row 4: 2sc, sc, 2sc, ch 1, turn. (5)
Row 5: sc across (5)
F/O, leaving a long tail for sewing onto head.
Mouth (black yarn):
Ch 16,
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, ch 1, turn. (15)
Row 2: 2sc, sc 13, 2sc, ch 1, turn. (17)
Row 3: 2sc, sc 6, ch 1, turn. (8)
Row 4: sc 3, ch 1, turn.
Row 5: sc 3, ch 1, turn to work in sides of rows 4 and 5,
sc in each of the 2 rows, continue with Row 3 as seen below:
Row 3 (continued): sc 5, ch 1, turn.
Row 4: sc 3, ch 1, turn.
Row 5: sc 3, ch 1, turn to work in sides of rows 4 and 5,
Sc in each of the 2 rows, continue with Row 3 as seen below:
Row 3 (continued): sc 3, 2sc in last st.
F/O, leaving a long tail for sewing onto head.
Line up eyes and mouth wherever you’d like, pin into place and sew onto hat.
