How is it possible that I have been making amigurumi patterns for years, but have never made a kitty cat?! Crazy, right? Don’t worry, though. All that has changed. Introducing: the Bubble Skirt Kitty Cat.
This pattern was originally supposed to be a gift for my little girl’s 2nd birthday, but I didn’t get my act together in time. I only had a partial idea for what I wanted this kitty cat to look like.
Now, if you’ve been following me for awhile, you know that I love the bubble stitch. Sometimes it’s called the bobble stitch, but I prefer bubble. Just ’cause. So when I decided to make a bubble skirt on this cat, it was set!

Materials:
-100 grams Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn! in Orchid
-100 grams Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn! in Grape
-25 grams Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn! Metallic in Pink Toes
-black embroidery thread
–2.25 mm (B) crochet hook (for sleepy eyes)
-Yarn needle
-Embroidery Needle (optional)
-Poly-Fil
Gauge:
5 sc x 6 rows
Stitches:
magic circle
sc – single crochet
inv dec – invisible decrease, single crochet 2 together in front loop only
sc blo – single crochet in back loops only
dc – double crochet
bubble stitch – *yarn over, insert hook in stitch, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, pull through two loops* 4 times, yarn over, pull through all 5 loops on hook, ch 1 (see diagram in pattern)
ch – chain
st – stitch
Pattern Notes:
- All parts of this cat, aside from the skirt, are worked in continuous rows. You will not slip stitch at the end of each round, so it is highly recommended that you use a stitch marker to put into the last stitch of each round.
- I use Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn! For this pattern. This is listed as medium weight, but it is lighter than many medium weight yarns such as Red Heart Super Saver and Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice. Just be aware that the gauge may change depending on the yarn you use.
- There will be a photo tutorial in the pattern for working the bubble stitch.
- The invisible decrease (inv dec) is simply a single crochet 2 stitches together done only in the front loops. If you’d rather just do a simple decrease, you are welcome to, but it will be noticable.
- Ch 1 does NOT equal a stitch.
- Ch 3 DOES equal a double crochet.
- When stuffing the cat with poly-fil, the best strategy to take is adding a little bit at a time while you are crocheting. If you add it all at once, it will be hard to keep it smooth. Make sure to pull the poly-fil apart with your hands before stuffing it into the cat.
- It’s important to count the rows, so a row counter is highly recommended.
- Follow the following guide for how number of stitches is communicated:
- The number before the stitch is the amount of times worked in one stitch
- The number after the stitch is the number of stitches you are to work that specific stitch into.
- When stitches are surrounded by asterisks (*), you are to repeat what is between the asterisks the amount of times stated.
- Number in parentheses is the number of stitches in each round.
- Eg. “*2sc, sc 4* 6 times (36)” means “2 single crochets in first stitches, single crochet once in next 4 stitches. Repeat this pattern 6 times. (There are 36 stitches in this round.)
Pattern:
Legs (make 2) {Orchid}:
Round 1: work 6sc in magic circle and pull end string to tighten
Round 2: 2sc in each st around (12)
Round 3: *2sc, sc 1* 6 times (18)
Round 4-25: sc in each st around (18)
Finish off and sew in ends.
Body {Grape} (Round numbering continues from legs):
Round 26: connect yarn to last stitch on first leg, ch 3, sc in each st of second leg, sc in each of the ch 3, sc in each stitch of the first leg, sc in other side of each ch 3. (42)
Place stitch marker in this last stitch.
Round 27: sc 9, 2sc, sc 22, 2sc, sc 9 (44)
Round 28: sc 10, 2sc, sc 22, 2sc, sc 10 (46)
Round 29-31: sc in each st around (46)
Round 32: sc blo in each st around (46)
Round 33-39: sc in both loops in each st around (46)
Round 40: sc 10, inv dec, sc 22, inv dec, sc 10 (44)
Round 41: sc 9, inv dec, sc 22, inv dec, sc 9 (42)
Round 42: *inv dec, sc 5* 6 times (36)
Round 43: *inv dec, sc 4* 6 times (30)
Round 44; *inv dec, sc 3* 6 times (24)

Finish off and sew in ends.
Skirt {Grape}:
Round 1: Attach Grape yarn in first stitch from sc blo round (round 32).
Ch 3 (counts as dc), *2dc in next stitch, dc in next* 22 times, dc in last st, sl st to join at the top of ch 3 at the beginning of round. (68)
Round 2: ch 3, dc 2, *bubble st (see below), dc 5* 10 times, bubble st, dc 4, sl st at top of ch 3. (68)
Round 3: ch 3, dc 4, bubble st, dc 5* 10 times, bubble st, dc 2, sl st at top of ch 3. (68)
Rounds 4-5: repeat Round 2 and 3. (68)
Round 6: ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each st around, sl st to join. (68)
Finish off and sew in ends.
Arms (make 2) {Orchid & Grape}
Round 1: Using Orchid, work 6sc in magic circle, pull string to tighten loop.
Round 2: 2sc in each st around (12)
Round 3: *2sc, sc 3* 3 times (15)
Rounds 4-6: sc in each st around (15)
Round 7: *inv dec, sc 3* 3 times (12)
Round 8: sc in each st around (12)
Rounds 9-18: switch to Grape, sc in each st around (12)
Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing onto body.
Sew onto each side of the body at round 42.
Head {Orchid}:
Round 1: work 6sc into magic circle/ring and pull end yarn tight to close
Round 2: 2sc in each st around (12)
Round 3: *2sc, sc 1* 6 times (18)
Round 4: *2sc, sc 2* 6 times (24)
Round 5: *2sc, sc 3* 6 times (30)
Round 6: *2sc, sc 4* 6 times (36)

- Sew Eyes onto face curving from between round 10 and 11 with 3 stitches between each eye.
- To crochet eyes, use B hook: ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from hook and every ch after. Finish off leaving a long tail to sew into place. (Make 2)
- For the nose: embroider an upside down triangle starting between round 15 and 16, and up to between round 12 and 13.
- For mouth: embroider a line starting at the bottom of the nose and moving down 2 rounds. You can add two lines one stitch long on either side of the original line to make a mouth.
Round 22: *inv dec, sc 3* 6 times (24)
Round 23: *inv dec, sc 2* 6 times (18)
Round 24: *inv dec, sc 1* 6 times (12)
Finish off leaving a long tail.
Ears (make 2) {Grape}:
Round 1: work 6 sc in magic circle, pull string to tighten loop.
Round 2: *2sc, sc 2* 2 times (8)
Round 3: *2sc, sc 3* 2 times (10)
Round 4: *2sc, sc 4* 2 times (12)
Round 5: *2sc, sc 5* 2 times (14)
Round 6: sc in each st around (14)
Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing onto head.
- Fold ear flat.
- Using Pink yarn, embroider a triangle onto ear.

- Sew one ear on each side of head starting at round 4 and moving down to round 10.
Flower {Grape}:
Ch 14, 2dc in 4th ch from hook, *dc, 2dc* 4 times, dc in last st. (22)
Finish off, leaving a long tail. Curl into a rose and sew in front of right ear.
