Floret Crochet Mug Cozy

It’s a gloomy and blustery day here in Minnesota, which always makes me want a warm cup of tea or hot chocolate. Maybe that’s why I love days like these so much.

Recently, since I’m expecting a baby in a few weeks, I have been drinking Organic Raspberry Leaf Tea . I love it!! It is supposed to help with speeding up labor and recovery, so I figured I might as well try. It kind of tastes like black tea, but a little milder. And it has no caffeine, so it’s perfect for a mama-to-be trying to keep caffeine as low as she can. We’ll be honest, though…I totally fail on that aspect.

Anyway, I thought it would be nice to have a pretty mug cozy to go with my tea every morning and with hot chocolate when things get gloomy. Nothing perks a person up better than a delicious cup of hot cocoa, right?! Well, that’s just chocolate in general, I guess.

I hope you enjoy this super quick and easy pattern. All it take is an hour to whip it up. This is my first time using the floret stitch, too, but it is so simple and absolutely beautiful! And don’t forget to check out the adorable buttons I used. They are the same ones I had for my Baby Girl Bow Booties. Happy Crocheting!!

Stitches:

ch – chain

dc – double crochet

floret stitch – ch 1 (counts as sl st), *dc in next stitch, sl st in next stitch* across.

sc – single crochet

sl st – slip stitch

Gauge:

4 double crochets x 2 rows = 1 inch

Notes:

  • a chain 3 counts as a double crochet
  • a chain 1 counts as a slip stitch
  • try to crochet as evenly as possible on both sides of the border, otherwise the shape of your cozy may be wonky
  • I had 28 single crochets on each of the long sides and 1 stitch in each stitch on the short sides with 2 single crochets in each corner to make sure the corners didn’t fold in.

Pattern:

ch 14,

Row 1: dc in 4th chain from hook and across, turn. (12)

Row 2: ch 1 (counts as sl st), dc in next stitch (first stitch will be skipped, because ch 1 counts as sl st), *sl st in next stitch, dc in next* 5 times, turn. (12)

Row 3: ch 3, dc in next stitch (first stitch will be skipped, because ch 3 counts as dc), dc in each stitch across, turn. (12)

Rows 4-25: repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have 25 rows (or until cozy measures to 8 1/2 inches).

Border:

  • ch 1, sc in first stitch and next 4 stitches, ch 12, skip next stitch, sc in next 4 stitches, 2sc in next stitch.
  • Turn work so that you are going along the edge of rows. Work 28 sc evenly across the edge.
  • Turn work so that you are going across the original chain, 2sc in first chain space, sc 10 across, 2sc in last chain space.
  • Turn work so that you are going along the edge of rows. Work 28 sc evenly across the edge.
  • Sl st into first sc from round. Finish off.

Sew button in middle of first row.

Enjoy!
