It’s less than 2 weeks until Halloween, so I think it’s time I shared the Halloween pattern that I have been planning since July. I originally had a Jack-o-Lantern pattern planned, but my silly husband had a better idea. He made a little joke and said that I should make a “Jacques-o-Lantern” instead. I thought this was an awesome idea!
So I thought it would be super cute and fun to make a Jack-o-Lantern with a French mustache instead of a mouth and nose. This is how the Jacques-o-Lantern was born.
The Jacques-o-Lantern is a very simple rag doll pattern and uses only single crochet with increases and decreases. There is a bit of sewing to make the eyes and mustache, but hopefully the little chart below helps!
I hope you have fun making this adorable little pumpkin. Have an awesome Halloween!!

Materials:
50 grams of orange worsted weight yarn (I used Crafter’s Secret in Orange)
10 grams of brown worsted weight yarn (I used Red Heart With Love in Chocolate)
30 grams black medium weight yarn (I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn! in Black)
For detailed recommendations, visit my Recommendations Page.
Stitches:
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
sc2tog – single crochet 2 together/single crochet decrease
Gauge:
5 sc x 5 rows = 1 inch square
Size of rag doll: 7 inches tall (including stem) by 7 inches wide
Pattern Notes:
- The two panels of the body of the jack-o-lantern will be slip stitched together once finished.
- The two panels of the stem of the jack-o-lantern will be sewed together once finished.
- Don’t stuff too full, or it will bulge out more than necessary. Be sure to stuff lightly.
- A ch 1 never counts as a stitch, but only as a turning chain.
- There is a graph provided to help with the placement of eyes and mustache.

Finish off first panel and sew in ends.
Embroider a face onto the finished panel with the eyes starting down 8 rows and in 9 stitches from each side. Make them 6 rows long. They should be 5 stitches wide. See picture below.
Mustache should start 19 rows down in the very center stitches and be 12 stitches long on each side. See picture below.
For second panel, don’t finish off. Once face has been embroidered on, slip stitch the two panels together with the outside facing out. Once you have it 3/4 of the way closed, stuff lightly with poly-fil. Finish slip stitching closed. Finish off and sew in ends.
Stem (Brown Yarn) – Make 2 panels:
ch 4,
Row 1: sc in 2nd chain from hook, sc in next 2 chains, turn. (3)

Rows 10-13: ch 1, sc in first stitch, sc in each stitch across, turn. (7)
Finish off first panel and sew in ends.
Finish off second panel with a long tail to sew together and on to body. Sew the pieces together from row 13 down to row 3. With the pieces separated and on either side of the stuffed body, sew through body in rows 2 and 1 around bottom stem and back up. Finish sewing stem pieces together around top. Finish off and sew in ends.

Do you have a pattern for the face?
Mary
All I have is the picture of the chart and what I have written in the pattern. I hope that helps!
Amy
I’m sorry I don’t understand (tired moms brain). Did you crochet triangles and the mustache and then sew them on or did you embroider the face on?
Mary
I just embroidered the face on. Sorry, I’ll clarify that in the pattern.
Amy
Ok thank you!
