Free Penguin Baby Pullover Crochet Pattern

Hi crochet friend!

Winter is in full swing here in the mountain valley of Wyoming! We’re getting snow at least once a week now, and the Christmas lights are up all around town. And I think it’s important to remember that sweaters are so nice to have this time of year, especially for our little ones. So, today I’m sharing my Penguin Pullover pattern with you!

You can get sizes 0-3 month, 3-6 month, and 6-12 month FREE here on my blog! If you’d like to make it for a toddler (12-18 month, 18-24 month, or 2T-3T), you can buy it in my Ravelry or Etsy Shops.

This pattern is so great, because it’s a simple pullover with a penguin applique added to the front. I like putting the applique right in the center of the chest, but you’re welcome to try it in the corner, or the bottom, too. Make it your own!

And next week, I’ll be sharing a matching hat and booties set to go with it! So be sure to sign up for my newsletter, so you don’t miss it!

The Penguin Pullover works up super quickly, too, so it’s a perfect gift to make this Christmas for that special little one in your life. My niece was my model, and I just can’t stop looking at how cute she is in this sweater! I mean, really, isn’t she just adorable?!

The yarn I used for this pattern was Baby Bee Sweet Delight in Flannel Marled from Hobby Lobby. I really love this kind of yarn. Even though it’s acrylic yarn, it’s sooooo soft and is very easy to work with. My only issue with this yarn is that I tend to get that “yarn vomit” at the very start, and it can be annoying to untangle the yarn for the first little while. Other than that, though, I really do love this yarn!

Anyway, I won’t keep you much longer. I want you to be able to get started on this beautiful pullover!

Happy Crocheting!

Pattern Notes:

  • This pattern is written for sizes 0-3 months, 3-6 months, & 6-12 months.
  • Pay attention to the gauge, because it is very important for the proper fit.
    • My crochet stitches tend to be tighter than most, so you may end up going up a hook size.
    • The brand of yarn can also result in a different gauge.
      • Use yarnsub.com to find the best substitute for yarn used in pattern.
  • This pattern uses the alternative double crochet stitch. You can find a tutorial for this stitch here.
  • The photo tutorial for borders is shown using a different yarn (tutorial stolen from herringbone pullover pattern). This does not change the way these borders are done. Please follow the directions for these below:
  • Use the following guide for how the number of stitches is communicated:
    • The number before the stitch is the amount of times worked in one stitch
    • The number after the stitch is the number of stitches you are to work that specific stitch into.
    • Ch 3 in applique will always count as a double crochet
    • Ch 2 in applique will always count as a half double crochet
    • Ch 1 throughout will NEVER count as a stitch.
    • When stitches are surrounded by asterisks (*), you are to repeat what is between the asterisks the amount of times stated.
    • Number in parentheses is the number of stitches in each round.
    • Eg. alt dc in first st, dc 7, 2dc, *dc 8, 2dc* 9x, sl st to join, turn. (100) means “work an alternative double crochet in first stitch, double crochet in next 7 stitches, work 2 double crochets in the next stitch, *double crochet in each of the next 8 stitches, work 2 double crochets in the next stitch * repeat the pattern between the asterisks 9 times, slip stitch in alternative double from beginning of round. (there are 100 stitches in this round)
