Hi crochet friend!

I am so excited to share another awesome pattern with you! The Mama’s Shrug is soft, simple, and beautiful!

Crocheting sweaters has always been a struggle for me. It isn’t because I can’t do it, but because I like quick patterns. So when I came across the shrug style that is made from a RECTANGLE, I was so excited!

For this pattern, I decided to use an alternating stitch pattern. So there will be a row of single crochet, followed by a row of double crochet, and the pattern will continue using this stitch pattern. It gives it a very structured look, I think.

So I hope you can hunker down this weekend and get started on this beautiful Mama Shrug. Hopefully you love it as much as I do!

Happy Crocheting!

Materials:

450-500 grams (2 ¼-½ skeins) Comfy Cotton Blend yarn in Sugarcane (or other 4 ply or light medium weight yarn)

6mm (J) crochet hook

Tapestry or Darning needle for sewing

Gauge:

15 stitches (dc/sc) x 12 rows (alternating sc and dc) = 4 inch square

*pay attention to gauge, especially if using an alternative yarn*

Size:

XS – Large (one size fits all)

Stitches:

ch – chain

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet

blo – back loop only

st(s) – stitch(es)

sl st – slip stitch

f/o – finish off

Pattern Notes:

  • Ch 3 always counts as a double crochet
  • Ch 1 never counts as a single crochet, but only a turning chain.
  • Make sure you have a long tail on each end of the rectangle. This will make it easier to sew the sleeves.
  • Shrug will start off as one big rectangle. It is important to make sure the rectangle is 27 inches long and 36 inches wide.
  • Because it is only sewn for the sleeves, you are welcome to make the arm holes as big or small as you’d like. For this pattern, I suggest 6 inches for an opening, but that is fully adjustable for your preference.
  • When crocheting the border, make sure you start at the very top where the neck is. This will hide any seam that would otherwise be noticable.
  • Please refer to all charts for instructions on how to fully assemble.

Pattern:

Starting with a long tail, ch 119, (or you could use a foundation single crochet of 118 and then continue with row 2)

Row 1: sc in second ch from hook, sc in each ch across, turn.

Row 2: ch 3, dc in next st and every st across, turn.

Row 3: ch 1, sc in same st and every st across, turn.

Rows 4-73: repeat rows 2-3

f/o, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Fold rectangle so that Rows 1 and 73 are touching and in line with one another (see below)

Measure 6 inches down from fold on either side and mark with a stitch marker, pinning the two folds together (see below)

Sew from end up to stitch marker on either side. F/o and sew in ends.

Open shrug so the top and bottom of original rectangle are lying flat (see below)

Border:

Connect yarn to very top of shrug body in a single crochet and ch 8,

(picture shows ch 8 and first row for border)

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and every chain across, sl st into next 2 sts in body of shrug, ch 1, turn. (7) See below:

Row 2: sc in blo across, ch 1, turn.

Row 3: sc in blo across, sl st into next st in shrug and then the next st, ch 1, turn.

Rows 4-239: repeat rows 2 and 3

Row 240: sl st together rows 1 and 239 to join.

f/o, sew in ends.

And you’re done! Enjoy the Mama’s Crochet Shrug!
